The platform-as-a-service provider, owned by Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM), announced the new offering – a standalone
cloud-basedPostgreSQL database – last week. The company has offered its cloud-based database services to customers of
theHeroku platform since 2007, but this new release extends it to customers who only want the database.
"Until now, Heroku's Postgres database service – originally launched in 2007 – has only been available to Heroku
customersfor use with Heroku platform apps," said Matthew Soldo, a product manager with Heroku. "With measured service
uptimeof four nines (99.99 percent), and designed data durability of eleven nines (99.999999999 percent), the service
istrustworthy for mission-critical data. As of today, these production-quality Heroku Postgres databases are
independentlyavailable for use from any cloud platform, provisioned instantly, metered by the second and without
contract."
