On my Sco-Openserver Unix machine, I need to start the postmaster like this

nohup pg_ctl -o -i start &

Also keep in mind that I have my environment variables setup eg.

PGDATA=/usr/local/pgsql/data
PGDATABASE=thenameofthedb
PGHOST=thenameofthemachine
PGUSER=postgres
