Got it, quite obvious too. The trigger has to be called BEFORE the
UPDATE, not AFTER. (Hmmm, very obvious even.)

CREATE TRIGGER _modified BEFORE UPDATE ON any_table FOR EACH ROW
EXECUTE PROCEDURE
touch();

That does the trick!
