You need to have the value protected into quotes, as it's a literal:

dim=# create table tl(a prefix_range default '[]');
CREATE TABLE
dim=# \d tl
                Table "public.tl"
 Column |     Type     |         Modifiers
--------+--------------+----------------------------
 a      | prefix_range | default '[]'::prefix_range
