Thanks Efrain I decided to do a clean install of OS and postgresql 12. for that I used your method. I changed the setting to postgres --> trust from peer then back to peer after I created a password in psql.
Thank you also Neto MUCH appreciated.
The installation instructions for postgres 12 is pointing to a broken link.
