The java client runs queries spanning a long time period followed by multiple queries spanning short time periods. The sql query is the same in both cases; only the bind parameters for the time frame differ. The short time period queries do not generate parallel plans (in my experience), but the long time period ones do, with plans that look something like this: Aggregate (cost=31552146.47..31552146.48
