I found a way to go a step further by checking the security one the data directory. It appears that the install process create the data folder using login you're currently logon. But it tried to access it using the postgres login that doesn't have any right on that directory. I had the "Full control" permission to postgres on the data directory and I went a step further. Haven't found the way to get the install all the way and I cannot start the service yet. I have a windows 2003 server SP1 running has a standalone machine (Not connected to a domain controler). Hope it will help getting forward to a solution. Finally guys...got this thing to work....just follow the simple steps.... 1] Allow full access to all users ( including "postgres" user) on "Postgres Folder". 2] Make "postgres" user as the owner of the data directory.... This is should install postgres without any error.... I got it to work..finally.... -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Installation-problem-%22...The-database-cluster-initialization-failed..%22-tp21343831p24822683.html Sent from the PostgreSQL - bugs mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
Hi! I got exactly the same error message in Windows 7 with installer postgresql-8.4.4-1-windows.exe. The solution there seems to be to run the installer one more time and specify that the data folder should be a new folder, not placed within the postgreSQL installation. I put mine in C:\postgreSQLdata . -- View this message in context: http://postgresql.1045698.n5.nabble.com/Installation-problem-The-database-cluster-initialization-failed-tp2130873p2805746.html Sent from the PostgreSQL - bugs mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
