The URL is: http://postgresql.org/docs/admin/install761.htm steps in the list which have problems are: 4, 6, 10, and 26 due to the "v" in the filename which is not in the filename on the FTP server. other parts of the install process have incorrect paths, for instance, in step 11, there is a change directory issued to: /usr/src/pgsql/src/ which should really go to: /usr/src/pgsql/postgresql-6.5.3/src/ This occurs in several places in the doc. Apparently the path above is where the tar file puts things. Other than that, the installation went well! This installation is on my third server. Having fun with it :-) You can see it in action on the order page of www.IncWay.com :-) Again, I hope I'm being helpful! Thanks! BDW At 07:09 PM 11/22/99 -0500, you wrote: > >On 21-Nov-99 Brian D. I was looking at it myself and agree with the thread from a month or two ago that it is *much* too complicated and verbose. Several steps should be moved to subsequent sections as reference or backup material (e.g. flex, regression tests), and the whole thing could be substantially condensed. - Thomas -- Thomas Lockhart lockhart@alumni.caltech.edu South Pasadena, California

I was working on something that takes it down to about 5 steps before the initdb phase of the installation - redirecting gmake's output was optional. I'll see if it's still around. Thanks for the tips. The paths clearly needed fixing in many places. Along the way, I am currently collecting evidence for a installation/makefile/autoconf/source tree cleanup. The documentation update should probably be done along with this. When I get some time (not before the end of this year) I would be willing to work on this, perhaps together with Vince, as he had some good ideas a while back. -Peter -- Peter Eisentraut Sernanders väg 10:115 peter_e@gmx.net 75262 Uppsala http://yi.org/peter-e/ Sweden

I looked around on three different machines for the document I was working on when I finally realized why it's nowhere to be found. I deleted it 'cuze it became clear that configure needed to be changed and there's a good chance it's beyond me to do it. I was thinking along the lines of an additional --with for the postgres user and using that for install.
